Blog Post 3

My main point for my Visual Argument Paper is that all of these companies are trying to make people feel like they have to look a certain way. There are some very good points to the ads like the Got Milk? ad which shows people that drinking milk is a very healthy choice that can be made in someone's life. Nike ads always involve athleticism and the push to exercise and be fit. Calvin Klein ads, though normally racy, tell people that they should be comfortable with their bodies. On the other hand, the Got Milk? ad is an image of a supermodel in a bikini. Being a supermodel, of course she would have to be in shape. Many girls look up to supermodels as role models and feel as if they must do exactly what the model would do and must also look like them. The Nike ad shows a young woman topless and is only covered by a pair of Nike shoes. This image portrays women negatively because it is way over the top for trying to sell shoes which obviously go on your feet not your breasts. This teaches kids especially girls that they can use their sexuality to get what they want and grasp attention from others. Nikes motto of "Just Do It" is not used in this image; I believe it is due to the fact that they are not trying to sell shoes for exercise but to just sell shoes for the aspect of making money. The Calvin Klein ad immediately makes men who do not look like the image feel inadequate about themselves and feel less manly due to the fact that the product being sold is actually called "MAN". People do not realize how images can effect men just as much as they can effect women, because men have body issues as well.

The images all relate to each other because they portray an image called "perfect", something that is unattainable by all. By showing people that are all known for their looks and physique; people may feel like they need to look just like the image to get noticed or be liked by other men and women. My main issue with these images is that they all try to use sex appeal and "fake" beauty to sell their products. To me real beauty is loving who you are for who you are no matter what you look like. These images teach us to be someone we are not and may never be able to be.

I believe that even though this image's main point is to show that milk is healthy, it may take this too far. The women pictured may make women feel that this is what they are supposed to look like. The image is targeted towards men and if this is what men like then women may believe this is what "perfect" looks like. Images like this may make people feel inadequate.

This girl is posing for Nike shoes, yet she is wearing the shoes to cover her breasts. This to me is completely unnecessary. Though the brand is trying to add sex appeal this takes it too far for the purpose of selling shoes. Young girls may see this add and see that this is a good way to get attention. Also the girl appears to be "flawless". Again the intended audience is men and nike fans, but it has a bigger impact on females. Due to the graphic content some parents may frown upon Nike's descion, and be less inclined to buy Nikes.

This image is of a man who is in very good physical shape. The name of the product is actually called "MAN". The intended audience is men and women, women because of the sex appeal and trying to get women to buy the products for the man in their lives and men because they feel like they should buy the fragrance to be found more attractive and manly. The image tells men that they would be more manly if they looked like the guy pictured.
